So you can show up prepared

What happens on the call

A consultation runs about thirty minutes. Here's the shape of it.

Before the call

You send a few details

The form at the bottom of this page asks for your name, your email, your site, and what you're trying to achieve. We read it before we meet, so the call starts with your situation instead of small talk.

First 10 minutes

You talk, we listen

What's the business, who are your customers, and what is your website doing or failing to do for them? We ask questions. We don't pitch.

Next 15 minutes

We tell you what we see

Where the real problem probably sits, what we'd look at first, roughly what that kind of work costs, and how long it usually takes. If we spot something you can fix yourself for free, we'll say so.

Last 5 minutes

You decide what's next

Sometimes that's a proposal. Sometimes it's a smaller paid audit so we both know what we're dealing with. Sometimes it's nothing, and that's a fine outcome too.

You get it in writing

A short recap of what we discussed and what we recommend, so you have something to share with your team even if you never work with us.

Being upfront

Who this call is for

This is a good use of your time if you recognize yourself here.

You run a small or mid-size business and your website has become something you avoid thinking about.

You have a site that works but isn't bringing in the customers you expected.

You've been told your site has accessibility problems and you don't know how serious that is.

You've been burned by an agency before and want to talk to whoever would actually do the work.

You're a nonprofit with a tight budget and need someone to be honest about what's worth spending on.

It's probably not the right call if you're collecting quotes to benchmark a price you already decided on, if you need someone to execute a spec that's finished and locked, or if the cheapest possible option is the deciding factor. We'd rather say that now than after you've spent an hour with us.

Five minutes of prep

What to have ready

None of this is required. Having it handy makes the thirty minutes go further.

Your website address, plus any staging or in-progress version.

What platform it's on, if you know. WordPress, Shopify, Squarespace, Wix, Webflow, custom, or no idea at all.

Who has the keys. Domain, hosting, email, and admin logins often live with a former contractor. Knowing that now saves weeks later.

Your traffic, roughly. Even a screenshot of last month's analytics helps. If you don't have analytics, that's useful to know too.

A deadline, if you have one. A campaign, a rebrand, a grant cycle, a storefront opening. Timing changes what we'd recommend.

A budget range. Not a final number. A range keeps us from recommending work that was never going to happen.

After the first call

What people say once we've talked

Malak is excellent and super knowledgeable. We've already learned so much from them about how to optimize our website and how we can better approach web design from a CX and engineering perspective.

I appreciate you helping us with this, and you have gotten it farther than we were able to take it.

Common questions

Before you book

Is the consultation really free?

Yes. No cost, no invoice afterward, and no obligation to hire us. We spend the time because it's the only honest way for both of us to find out whether the work is a good fit.

If we can point you at a fix you can handle yourself, we will, and that's the end of it.

How long is the call?

About thirty minutes. That's enough to understand your business, look at your site together, and give you a real recommendation.

If your project needs longer, we'll schedule a second conversation rather than rushing the first one.

Who will I be talking to?

The people who would actually do the work. You will not be handed to a salesperson and then reintroduced to a delivery team later.

Do I need to know exactly what I want before booking?

No. Plenty of good calls start with "something about our website isn't working and I can't tell what."

Bring the symptoms. Figuring out the cause is our job, and it's a large part of what the call is for.

How quickly will you get back to me?

Within one business day. If you write over a weekend or a holiday, you'll hear from us the next business morning.

What's the minimum engagement?
Retainers start at $2,500 per month, on the Steady tier. We don't take on smaller engagements as retainers because the relationship doesn't have room to be useful at that size. If you have a one-off project, an audit or page build is probably a better fit (see Audits or Page Building).
What do you need from us to get started?
Usually, admin-level access. That surprises people, but most platforms require admin permissions to generate API keys, configure OAuth credentials, or set up webhook endpoints. We'll walk you through exactly what we need and why before we ask for access to anything.
